Jason Wilde’s Free Portrait Studio started life in 2009 under a railway bridge in Chalk Farm, London. Since then, 51 makeshift portrait studios were set-up inside a variety of venues in and around the London Borough of Camden. Visitors to these venues were then invited to have their portrait taken in return for a free A4 black and white portrait.

2021 people accepted that invitation.

Equal parts English history, cultural anthropology and human narrative, the photographs eschew the overtly conceptual motifs of much contemporary portraiture in favour of the descriptive powers of the medium. This on-going body of work aims to reflect the complex nature of contemporary English society through multiple individual portraits.

The ongoing nature of the project and the number of images already made offer up a wealth of interesting editing opportunities and JWFPS 01 is the first in a series of magazines that will explore this evolving archive of portraits.
